Why Does Soccer Receive So Little Media Attention?

Adan-Laurence, 2007-07-19 14:11:06
I've always been wondering why soccer has been receiving so little media attention on tv. I see them showing poker games, the world's strongest man contest, nascar etc. etc. but no soccer games really. even though I believe there would be high enough ratings for it on tv by far with all the people here from different countries and diverse ethnic backgrounds. mexican channels here in the states always get huge ratings from it. so why don't american channels catch on? is there something against soccer that they would rather show any sport in the world except soccer?

This is why in 1950, the United States had a decent team in the World Cup; the team was made up of players who had been playing since childhood before the war; subsequent generations would be born and raised outside the game, not knowing about it. Recent immigrants, many of whom of Latin American origin, would bring their love of football to the United States, and thus renewing the idea that football is a "foreign sport."III.sports reporters hate football. they hate it with all their guts. why? because they did not grow up with it, perhaps, and now see it as an intrusion into their sports pantheon. I don't know why they hate it, but they mostly do. many of them like American football and basketball, but they mythologize baseball. a lot. guys like bob costas with their stories/myths about the great players of years past, and the "great game" and "America's pastime" (even though American football is the most popular sport in the U.S. and has been since the mid-1970s). anyway, they hate soccer and don't want to see it succeed and they help shape the American sporting landscape.IV.people like to say that soccer will never make it because there's too many channels and other options. I'd like to think that soccer will be more succesful because there are a lot of channels and the internet gives the sport a bigger face than in years past. think about when NASL was around and there were only three channels (abc, nbc, cbs) there was no way that NASL could have made it. one game a week at most? now MLS may not be the television superstar the NFL is in the U.S. (after all American football is perfect for television, the way soccer is not) but it has a fighting chance and things look better for it in the future. it will take time, money and patience, and the MLS seems to understand that now. look for bigger things in the upcoming years...V.okay, so perhaps I did not answer this question exactly, but I hope to bring up some points that are relevant, especially after reading some other people's responses to this question.

I guess they figure the huge international fan base is enough...most people would rather watch international soccer games than American soccer games, anyway. The reason is because, the media believes Soccer is mostly targeted for hispanics, and hispanic media air all soccer games (including MLS). The only time you would really see soccer air on american tv would be during the World Cup.
